If you’re going to have the Triops for some time, it’s a good idea to design their habitat. Doing it with care is vital. The decoration will only appeal to you and your guests. The Triops won’t mind if you put decorations or not. For those using natural decorations, make sure that they don’t contain chemicals which can cause harm to the Triops. Use only the decorations that will not leak any minerals or chemicals into the water.
You can add more oxygen in the tank or container by putting more plant decorations. Aside from providing oxygen, the plants can also break down the wastes of the Triops. It can also make your tank or container more attractive. Some Triops also feed on the plants. You can get the plants from local pet stores and shops; very good examples are the elodea and the sword plant. There are cheap plants as well as expensive ones so it’s up to you to pick the right one.
Having a bubbler and filter inside the tank can also make it more interesting. You can always use a filter but if you have hatchlings, this may not be a good idea. If you already installed a filter, turn it off during this stage because the hatchlings can get killed. The under-gravel filter is an excellent choice but only if you have a gravel substrate. For those using soil or sand, it will perform less efficiently.
Corner and external filters may also be used. In the case of corner filters, you can only use it when the Triops are big enough not to be pulled inside the filter. The external filters on the other hand are also too strong and it is best suited for large tanks. Since the Triops are used to quiet and still environments, the filters may not be installed; still, that is a matter of personal choice.
If you’re not using any filtration system, you can use the bubbler. You can also use it together with the filter. Triops also need oxygen like any other creature. In some studies, excess oxygen can increase the size of the Triops. The rate of metabolism of the Triops is greatly dependent on the available food, temperature, and oxygen levels. More eggs are also produced with higher levels of oxygen.
There is one disadvantage of using a bubbler – the debris is stirred up and so visibility can be obscured. When using a bubbler, you need to turn it off from time to time. Try to observe the Triops and their behavior so that you will know when to turn off the bubbler.
